Technology + Engineering + History = IEEE REACH

While STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) continues to gain attention in academia, and is a focus in shaping academic experiences for students, history teachers worldwide will soon have access to similar resources to inspire their students.

IEEE REACH, (Raising Engineering Awareness through the Conduit of History), will bring technology, engineering, and society to life in the classroom. Pulling from over 35 years worth of IEEE History Center’s resources, educational resources that include free online resources, primary sources, videos and hands-on activities are being designed for high school teachers to enable each teacher to explore the history of specific technologies, their development and advancement, and their impact on society, politics, economics, and culture.

Rizco was tasked with brand development, marketing materials, and the web-based platform that will support the assets for the program. In its recent completion and revelation at USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C. in April of 2016, IEEE REACH’s brand is a representation of a three-dimensional cube extending outward in all directions. In two-dimensions, the square provides balance and can be considered a foundational building block essential to engineering. The arrows nod back to drafting and imply expansion beyond the “box”. Second, a strong slab-serif typeface was selected to provide a solid footing to the brand name, while maintaining approachability. Last, through the analysis of color theory, purple was selected to represent out-of-the-box thinking, technological innovation, and possibility. The combination of purple and a yellow/gold palette represent discovery, awareness, and clear-thinking.

The use of purple is used for conveying technological innovation and possibility. The purple and yellow color palette evoke discovery, sparks interest and clear-thinking.
